Thabo Makgoba

Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town and chancellor, University of the Western Cape

Thabo Makgoba is Anglican Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and chair of the Anglican Communion Environmental Network and Adjunct Professor at GSB, Allan Gray School for values.

A former commissioner of the Press Freedom Commission of South Africa. Makgoba is a recipient of several awards and honours, including: Cross of St Augustine, Archbishop of Canterbury; Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, General Theological Seminary, Episcopal Church, NY (2009); Doctor of Divinity, jure dignitatis, Huron University College, Ontario (2013); Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship. Procter Fellow, EDS, Cambridge, USA.

He holds a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town, Master of Education in Educational Psychology and Higher Diploma in Education Science (PG). He graduated with a PhD from the University of Cape Town in 2009. He was awarded the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship to study for his PhD.

He holds three honorary doctorates in divinity, from the General Theological Seminary, New York (2009), Huron University College (2013) and the University of the South, Sewanee (2015).

He hold an honorary doctorate in Literature from the University of the Witwatersrand (2016) as well as the Chancellor's Medal from the University of Pretoria (2015). He is currently the Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (2012).
