Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a new partnership with Shopify aimed at bringing agentic shopping and checkout capabilities to Meta’s recently launched Muse artificial intelligence platform.
Zuckerberg said Monday in a post on X that the Meta-Shopify partnership will “make shopping and checkout easier in Muse,” expanding the AI agent’s capabilities as Meta pushes deeper into AI-powered commerce.
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke announced the collaboration earlier in the day. Under the partnership, Muse users will be able to access agentic checkout through Shop Pay across Shopify-powered stores. The integration is designed to streamline online purchases by allowing AI agents to assist users through more of the shopping and payment process.
Investors responded positively to the announcement, with Shopify shares jumping about 7% on Monday.
Meta introduced Muse earlier in September as a mobile-based personal AI agent. The service has gained significant attention in the weeks following its launch, climbing Apple’s App Store rankings and overtaking prominent apps and services including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, prediction market Kalshi and Polymarket.
The Shopify agreement also highlights differing approaches among major ecommerce companies toward AI shopping agents. While Shopify is opening its merchant ecosystem to Meta’s Muse through Shop Pay, Amazon has taken a more restrictive position.
Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from accessing its retail website, creating a sharp contrast with Shopify’s decision to integrate the technology directly into its shopping infrastructure.
The partnership comes as technology and ecommerce companies increasingly explore agentic AI, which can perform tasks on behalf of users rather than simply answering questions. Shopping is emerging as a major potential use case, with AI agents capable of helping consumers discover products, compare options and complete transactions.
For Meta, integrating Shopify and Shop Pay could strengthen Muse’s position as an AI assistant capable of handling real-world commerce. Shopify, meanwhile, gains another channel through which its merchants could reach consumers as AI-powered shopping becomes more widely adopted.
