A/Professor and Director Palliative Care Studies at IMPACCT (Improving Palliative, Aged & Chronic Care through Clinical Research & Translation), University of Technology Sydney
A/Professor Louise Hickman’s research program has advanced knowledge about team models for older people, with a strategic focus on heart failure, dementia/cognition, palliative care, and technologies. A/Professor Hickman has expertise is in both quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research which is grounded in her qualifications in Nursing, Masters of Public Health and a PhD. Her research program bridges the gaps between the acute care sector, community, and residential aged care.

A/Professor Hickman’s research program has a large number of publications with citations in international guidelines and position statements. A/Professor Hickman has successfully worked on multiple research projects to completion and attained competitive funding. Her research work has been presented at international and national conferences, webinars, television media coverage, and extensive dissemination through social media.

A/Professor Hickman has over 20 years of significant clinical, research and academic leadership anchored in healthcare delivery. With three Director Roles for post-graduate programs over the last decade. Her in-depth knowledge of research and the health care industry combined with her significant understanding of curriculum, pedagogy and drivers for learning enables her to better address the needs of communities and health care organisations.

A/Professor Hickman is currently Director of Studies Palliative Care Programs based at the UTS research center IMPACCT (Improving Palliative, Aged & Chronic Care through Clinical Research & Translation). As Director she partnered with consumers, students, clinicians and industry to create authentic and distinctive learning experiences. This resulted in research integrated postgraduate interdisciplinary online Palliative Care Masters, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate course aimed at creating palliative care change agents who are valued and successful health professionals, enrolling from many clinical areas to improve end-of-life outcomes at the point of care.

A/Processor Hickman’s research policy and professional leadership record is extensive she currently holds six scientific leadership positions 1) Editor-in-Chief Contemporary Nurse 2) Secretariat for Palliative Care Nurses Australia; 3) Education Committee Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand; 4) National Advisory Group Palliative Care, Education, and Training Collaborative; 5) Cardiovascular Expert Reference Group, Joanna Briggs Institute; 6) Committee member Sydney Chapter Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI)
