Jan Ivar Korsbakken

Senior Researcher, Center for International Climate and Environment Research - Oslo
Jan Ivar Korsbakken has been a Senior Researcher at CICERO since 2015. His primary research areas include estimating effects and costs of climate mitigation measures, climate scenario analysis, analysis of energy statistics and projections of future emission trends. He also works on modelling exchange of greenhouse gases in natural ecosystems.He has conducted several studies of CO2 emission patterns and mitigation measures for businesses and government agencies in Norway, and contributed to several publications on economic drivers of greenhouse gas emissions and emissions reduction. Dr Korsbakken has also conducted a major study on how to interpret Chinese energy statistics and energy trends in China, and contributes to the annual Global Carbon Budget published by the Global Carbon Project.

Dr Korsbakken holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating he worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company for 3 years. After McKinsey and before joining CICERO, he spent one year conducting research for the New Climate Economy, a project funded by the governments of seven countries to study measures that can both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen economic growth. He co-authored the chapter on energy systems in the first major report from the project, which was published in late 2014 ahead of the negotiations for the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.
