YouTube Premium subscribers have started receiving email announcements from the platform, informing them of a looming price increase. The changes will primarily affect users in some regions paying for the Family Plan, but they might still have a chance to convince Google to postpone the price hike.
Several YouTube Premium users have shared screenshots of the email they received on Thursday about the upcoming price change. The first messages shared online came from subscribers based in Canada, leading some people to assume that the price hike would be limited in the country. Later, however, more posts from other Redditors confirmed that it would be implemented in the United States as well.
The announcement of the YouTube Premium price hike via email follows what Google says on its support page. Members will be notified about price changes at least 30 days before they are implemented. Both the emails received by Canadian and US users indicate that YouTube Premium’s price increase will start on Monday, Nov. 21.
The price hike will only affect the YouTube Premium Family Plan, according to the email notifications, which currently costs $17.99 / CA$17.99. Starting Nov. 21, the subscription tier will be priced at $22.99 / CA$22.99 per month.
An individual membership costs $11.99 monthly, and the email alerts did not mention if it is going to be changed next month. Android Police’s Will Sattelberg noted that he has an individual subscription and did not receive an email about a price increase.
There is not much explanation in the email announcement. Google only implies that it needs to increase YouTube Premium’s price “to continue delivering great service and features.”
From YouTube Help
The company has, interestingly, put up a feedback page on the YouTube Help platform, where YouTube Premium members can give Google a piece of their mind about the price hike. It comes with a disclaimer, though, that customers will not receive an individual response after sending feedback.
It appears, however, that the feedback page has seen huge traffic since the YouTube Premium price hike was announced. The page currently displays a banner message that reads, “We’re currently experiencing high contact volumes.”
