The lack of concrete news about the status of George R.R. Martin's “The Winds of Winter” is leaving fans grasping at straws and complaining about click-baity articles that claim to know about when the American fantasy author plans to release the sixth book in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” ("ASOIAF") series.
Unfortunately for fans, Martin himself has been consistently tight-lipped about any further news regarding “The Winds of Winter.” The last official news mentioning “The Winds of Winter” from Martin's own official blog was from April, with not a peep of news about the upcoming book since then. There was a time when fans could stave off the update drought with sneak-peek chapters that Martin himself shared but sadly, that option has been taken away.
The author may have shared and read in public sample chapters from “The Winds of Winter” in the past but sometime mid-year, Martin decided to stop sharing content from the upcoming book. Martin's decision to stop sharing content comes with his experience of sharing material about his short story, “Sons of the Dragon” before it was published in the anthology “Book of Swords.” According to Martin, releasing the content prior to publishing may have hurt the piece's performance in reviews.
With no fresh news about “The Winds of Winter's” release date, fans will have to take Martin at his word that they can expect the sixth book from Martin's “ASOIAF” series to get published after his upcoming spin-off title about the Targaryens, “Fire and Blood,” gets published on Nov. 20.
While a bitter truth that Martin will continue to be evasive about updates on “The Winds of Winter,” there is a sliver of hope that an official announcement may come from the author when “Fire and Blood” gets published. Till then, Martin has familiar words for his fans waiting for “The Winds of Winter,” similar to what he had to say to his the audience during an interview at the Locus Science Fiction Foundation's fundraising event last August: “I'm working on it.”
