Trump administration officials have reportedly explored ways to reduce the operational role of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing individuals familiar with internal discussions. The conversations, which allegedly involved Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., focused on concerns over internal disputes among the commissioner’s top deputies and the overall management of the agency.
Sources claim Kennedy considered bringing in another senior leader to take charge of the FDA’s day-to-day responsibilities while keeping Makary in a more symbolic leadership position. The idea was intended to stabilize internal dynamics and strengthen the agency’s decision-making structure. However, officials have chosen to hold off on restructuring for now, giving Makary additional time to address leadership issues and improve cohesion within the FDA.
A White House spokesperson affirmed that the administration remains confident in both the Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA. The spokesperson emphasized that the agency, under Makary’s direction, continues to advance initiatives designed to support President Donald Trump’s commitment to “Make America Healthy Again,” highlighting efforts focused on improving public health and regulatory efficiency.
In a key leadership update, the FDA recently appointed renowned oncology expert Richard Pazdur to oversee the division responsible for regulating most prescription and over-the-counter medications. Pazdur’s appointment follows the resignation of George Tidmarsh earlier this month after concerns surfaced regarding his personal conduct, prompting the agency to accelerate leadership changes in this critical department.
As discussions about the FDA’s internal structure evolve, the administration appears intent on maintaining stability while pushing forward with major health and regulatory initiatives. Despite earlier considerations of reassigning responsibilities, officials now seem focused on giving Makary the opportunity to strengthen his leadership and guide the agency through ongoing reforms.
