Ukraine launched a series of drone attacks on Tuesday targeting Moscow, western regions of Russia, and the annexed Crimean Peninsula, according to Russian authorities. The attacks, which reportedly occurred over several hours, resulted in at least one civilian injury near the Russian capital, highlighting the continued escalation of drone warfare amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Russia’s defence ministry said its air defence systems destroyed a total of 27 Ukrainian drones during a three-hour period starting at 8 p.m. local time. Of these, three drones were intercepted over the Moscow region, while others were downed across western Russia and Crimea. Andrei Vorobyov, the governor of the Moscow region, stated on Telegram that a total of 21 drones were neutralized over the region throughout the day. He confirmed that one civilian was injured as a result of the attacks but did not provide further details on the person’s condition.
The reported drone strikes came just one day after Russia accused Ukraine of attempting to attack President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Moscow did not present evidence to support the claim. Ukrainian officials dismissed the accusation as baseless, suggesting it was intended to undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and peace talks related to the war that Russia launched against Ukraine nearly four years ago.
There were no immediate reports of significant damage caused by the drone attacks. Russian authorities typically limit disclosures regarding damage from Ukrainian strikes unless civilian casualties or civilian infrastructure are affected, making it difficult to independently assess the full impact.
Separately, a power outage affected a town outside Moscow on the same day. Russia’s RIA news agency reported that the blackout was caused by a technical fault at a regional power facility, citing local energy officials. The SHOT Telegram news channel, which claims sources within Russia’s security services, reported that approximately 100,000 residents were impacted by the outage. Authorities said there was no immediate evidence linking the power failure to the Ukrainian drone attacks.
As the conflict continues, drone strikes have become an increasingly prominent feature of the war, underscoring rising security concerns for regions far from the front lines.
