Jennifer Piggott, a former Trump supporter, regrets her vote after losing her job at the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Fiscal Service (BFS) in Parkersburg, West Virginia. She was among over 125 federal employees dismissed in February under the Trump administration’s cost-cutting measures led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Despite supporting Trump's government overhaul, many in Parkersburg, a strong Republican area, are now facing economic uncertainty. The BFS layoffs have impacted 2,200 local jobs, with fears of further cuts. While Trump won West Virginia with 70% of the vote, local lawmakers are now questioning the sudden mass terminations.
Business owners worry about reduced consumer spending, comparing the layoffs to past economic downturns. The Blennerhassett Hotel and Parkersburg Brewing anticipate losses, as BFS employees, known for stable incomes, contributed significantly to the local economy.
West Virginia, where 3.7% of jobs are federal, now faces disproportionate losses. Residents like Roger Conley, who once defended Trump’s efficiency plans, are reconsidering their stance after personal job losses. Veterans, making up 30% of the federal workforce, are particularly affected, with many struggling to make ends meet.
Despite public protests, the White House maintains its focus on reducing government costs. Trump’s approval rating remains steady at 44%, but discontent is growing in Republican strongholds. Piggott and others are now facing financial uncertainty, with some considering selling their homes.
As Trump’s cost-cutting measures unfold, the economic impact on communities like Parkersburg could shape future political shifts.
