U.S. President Donald Trump is set to headline a major event celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary after several scheduled musical performers withdrew from the festivities, citing concerns over the event’s association with the president.
The celebration is part of the Great American State Fair, a 16-day event scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10, 2026, on Washington’s National Mall. Organized by Freedom 250, the fair will span from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument and feature state pavilions, exhibits, amusement rides, entertainment venues, and other attractions designed to mark America’s semiquincentennial.
The event’s concert series, originally intended to serve as the opening ceremony, has faced growing challenges following multiple performer cancellations. Bret Michaels, lead vocalist of the rock band Poison, became the fifth artist to withdraw from the lineup. Michaels stated that the celebration no longer appeared to be the nonpartisan event he initially believed it would be.
Following the departures, Freedom 250 announced on social media that Trump will personally launch the historic America 250 celebration. The organization has not publicly disclosed specific reasons behind the artist withdrawals and did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.
Earlier Saturday, Trump addressed the situation on Truth Social, suggesting that a concert lineup may no longer be necessary if additional performers decide to leave. Instead, he proposed holding an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” on the National Mall, arguing that his appearance could attract larger crowds than the musical acts originally booked for the event.
In his post, Trump described himself as one of the world’s biggest attractions and claimed he consistently draws massive audiences. He also said he had instructed his representatives to examine the feasibility of organizing the rally as part of the broader celebration.
Freedom 250 is a public-private partnership established by the White House to coordinate nationwide events commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary in collaboration with federal agencies and other organizations. The upcoming festivities remain a central component of America 250 celebrations planned throughout 2026.
