President Donald Trump dismissed criticism over an AI-generated image showing him as the pope, calling it a “harmless joke” after the White House reposted it from his Truth Social account. The image, which went viral alongside another showing Trump with a red lightsaber, sparked backlash from religious communities and communication experts who warned about the blurring of fact and fiction.
While Trump claimed he had no role in creating or posting the image, he told reporters, “It was just, somebody did it in fun. It’s fine. Have to have a little fun, don’t you?” The White House declined to clarify who manages his Truth Social posts or who created the controversial content.
Experts argue that Trump’s use of AI-generated content reflects a new political strategy. John Wihbey, head of the AI-Media Strategies Lab at Northeastern University, called it “a merging of social media and AI power” for narrative control. He predicts more politicians will adopt this method to manipulate public perception.
The imagery offended many Catholics globally, including former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who condemned it as disrespectful to religious institutions. Democratic strategist Michael Ceraso said the move was likely a calculated effort to stir engagement, describing Trump as “the first influencer president.”
Presidential rhetoric scholar Jennifer Mercieca noted Trump’s visuals aim to reinforce a heroic persona amid falling approval ratings. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Trump at 42% approval, with growing discontent over his economic and immigration policies.
Analysts warn that AI-generated political images may become more sophisticated, potentially rewriting visual history. Trump’s embrace of AI and provocative memes could set a precedent for political campaigns worldwide.
