U.S. President Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that large-scale oil, natural gas, and mineral exploration activities are expected to begin in Greenland, highlighting the Arctic territory's vast resource potential and growing strategic importance to American national security.
In a social media post, Trump described the upcoming exploration efforts as “massive,” suggesting that Greenland could hold some of the world's most accessible untapped energy reserves. However, he did not provide specific details regarding the timeline, companies involved, or the scope of the proposed operations.
Trump claimed that experts believe Greenland possesses extraordinary oil resources, potentially exceeding those found in many other regions worldwide. He cited assessments suggesting that the territory's easily accessible oil deposits could rank among the largest globally, although he offered no supporting evidence.
Beyond its natural resources, Trump emphasized Greenland's critical role in strengthening U.S. defense capabilities, particularly against emerging aerial and missile threats.
The president argued that Greenland's geographical position makes it an essential component of America's national security strategy. He suggested that potential attacks targeting the United States could be intercepted through advanced defense systems stationed on the island.
Trump specifically highlighted the ability of U.S. military infrastructure in Greenland to counter drones, missiles, and other sophisticated weapons, including technologies that have yet to be developed.
His latest remarks follow a September agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland designed to expand Washington's military presence and strategic influence across the Arctic territory.
The agreement emerged after months of tensions surrounding Trump's repeated demands for greater American control over Greenland, which remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Trump had previously raised the possibility of using military force to secure the island, arguing that its location and resources were vital to protecting U.S. interests.
Under the September arrangement, the United States is expected to establish two additional military bases in Greenland while deploying elements of its proposed Golden Dome missile defense system.
The developments underscore Washington's increasing focus on Greenland as both a potential source of valuable energy and mineral resources and a strategic location for strengthening American defense operations in the Arctic.
