The Trump administration has shut down 18F, a government digital service team known for modernizing federal technology, including the IRS’s free tax-filing platform. The General Services Administration (GSA) confirmed the decision, citing an executive order on "Government Efficiency Workforce Optimization" issued on February 11.
Thomas Shedd, Director of Technology Transformation Services at GSA, informed employees of the termination, identifying their roles as "non-critical." About 90 workers were immediately locked out of their systems.
Elon Musk, head of the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, previously responded to a social media post referring to 18F as a “far-left government-wide computer office,” stating that the team had been “deleted.”
Founded in 2014 under President Obama, 18F was part of the GSA and played a crucial role in modernizing government websites, improving accessibility, and enhancing digital services. The team contributed to the development of the IRS’s free direct-file tax system, which remains operational despite the shutdown.
The decision has sparked debate, with critics arguing that dissolving 18F could hinder digital innovation and government efficiency. Supporters, however, view the move as part of a broader effort to reduce bureaucracy and streamline government operations.
As the administration continues restructuring federal technology initiatives, the future of digital modernization efforts remains uncertain.
