“This Is Us” Season 2 Updates: A “Lighter” Series Return Following Heartbreaking Finale; Will “Most Likely” Premiere In September

Title card for NBC's 'This Is Us'

The Season 1 finale of NBC’s family drama “This Is Us” sent some fans reeling (and probably squashed a few crazy rumors about Milo Ventimiglia’s character, Jack).

The “Moonshadow” episode ended with Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) having a huge blowout after the former showed up drunk at her supposed debut with Ben (Sam Trammell) and his band. After knowing Ben tried to kiss his wife, Jack beat up Ben in front of the band, which prompted the show’s cancellation and tour, The Hollywood Reporter said in a recap.

The two later said things they can no longer take back, with Rebecca demanding Jack to stay at his bestfriend Miguel’s (Jon Huertas) home. The finale saw Jack making an impassioned speech about his love for his wife before walking out the door.

Although this was not the ending fans suspected, it was still “dire,” considering the fact that it has already made known in earlier episodes that Rebecca would eventually end up with Miguel, and Jack dead. But writers have promised in a post-finale Q&A session that Season 2 will be much “lighter,” TVLine reported.

“We were talking to Dan today for a few hours about Season 2. We kept pitching things, and then we kept saying: “Too sad!” We want to find that balance, for sure,” episode co-writer Elizabeth Berger said.

Chrissy Metz, who plays the older version of Rebecca and Jack’s daughter Kate, said that a wedding would be one of them. However, Chris Sullivan, who plays older Kate’s love interest Toby, said the wedding will be beleaguered with couple issues typically rising in wedding prep.

“I think they’re coming down from the dopamine, serotonin festival of falling in love… it’s about to get real,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bustle said the show’s Season 2 will most likely premiere on Tuesday, September 19, which would evidently fall during “premiere week.” It also makes sense, considering that Season 3 is expected to start in 2018.
