The end of “Game of Thrones” signifies more than just the conclusion of an epic saga that spanned a generation. It also meant the formation of a power vacuum in the world of event TV and many networks and companies are already trying to fill it. Among the top contenders is “The Witcher” by Netflix and based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski. If done right, it certainly can be since it has many of the same elements that made “Game of Thrones” so popular.
The race to replace what until recently had been the biggest TV show in the world is on, Polygon reports, and the contenders are some of the most significant heavy hitters in the industry. On top of traditional TV networks trying to come up with their own offerings, Netflix and Amazon are joining in, as well. This is where “The Witcher” is expected to perform the best.
Anyone who has read the books will know that “The Witcher” is less about fighting dragons, monsters, and vampires, and more about personal stories. Its pages are filled with love, camaraderie, sacrifice, and loyalty. These are exactly the things that made “Game of Thrones” worth following over the first five seasons, with the battles, dragons, and magic being just a nice bonus.
Complicated characters and events are ever present in “The Witcher,” with practically no significant figure being a stereotype. Their relationships are also tested time and again, both by internal and external forces. With this being the case, it’s no wonder that the books have sold so well, though much of its later popularity can also be attributed to the game.
As such, “The Witcher” series that Netflix is developing holds a lot of potential to become exactly the kind of show that could hold its own against “Game of Thrones.” Even now, no other contender comes close, unless counting Amazon’s rights to “Lord of The Rings.”
