CD Projekt Red is often considered one of the best video game developers in the industry right now. Its dedication to consumer service and the quality of its games are just two reasons why it has so many fans. However, the company recently had to give in to the demands of Andrzej Sapkowski for more money in return for using his works, “The Witcher” book series, for “The Witcher” games.
Those familiar with this story will likely already know that the company bought the rights to “The Witcher” books from Andrzej Sapkowski for when they made “The Witcher 1.” Since then, however, the games have become a huge success, finally culminating with “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” As PC Gamer reports, the author wanted a slice of that pie and demanded that CD Projekt Red pay him $16 million.
Initially, CD Projekt Red rejected the demand, saying that it was “groundless with regard to their merit as well as the stipulated amount." However, the author of “The Witcher” books is nothing if not persistent. As a result, it would appear that the company has decided to give in and give him more money than what was paid out when the rights to the IP was bought.
The specific amount that the company will be giving to the writer has yet to be revealed. However, it will likely be much lower than what Sapkowski had asked for. The reason for why CD Projekt Red decided to give in, in the end, is simply to maintain good relations with the creator of “The Witcher” universe. After all, the company might want to go back into that universe at some point in the future.
With this development, the friction between the writer and the video game developers might finally be put to rest. Fans of “The Witcher” series can also start hoping for another game to come out of it on top of the Netflix show that is currently in production.
