“The Winds of Winter” will definitely not be coming out this year as George R.R. is still working on the sixth book of the saga. But even though it might come out before the eight season of “Game of Thrones” airs, most of the story inside has already been touched upon by its TV adaptation’s seventh installment.
Of course, there’s still the story of Lady Stoneheart and other characters not included in the series but overall, the main plot of the “Winds of Winter” has pretty much been revealed. And it’s for this reason that hardcore fans of Martin have been disappointed with the progress he’s made. After all, the fifth book of the saga, “A Dance With Dragons” came out seven years ago.
However, Martin did say that he’s taking his time due to the tremendous pressure he places on himself to produce a masterpiece. And with “The Winds of Winter” among the most anticipated book sequels out there, the author indeed has a lot of expectations to meet.
This is doubly true as Martin managed to create multiple characters that fans came to love. Jon Snow, Arya Stark, The Hound, Bronn, and even Podric has accumulated a large following online. The author also said that trying to finish “The Winds of Winter” and “Dreams of Spring” almost killed him.
As such, Martin said that “A Song of Ice and Fire” will be the last book saga he’ll be tackling and he’s going to stick to short stories and standalone novellas once he’s done with “The Winds of Winter” and “Dreams of Spring.”
Another reason why Martin is taking a long time in finishing this series is due to the complicated plot that he has woven. Indeed, “A Dance of Dragons” ended with a lot of open stories that still need exploring. But as said earlier, “The Winds of Winter” has already been covered by its TV counterpart taking a lot of excitement from the book. As for when the sixth book is going to be released, the author hasn’t been forthcoming about this regard.
Right now, the eighth season of “Game of Thrones” will be airing on April 2019. That installment will be covering “Dreams of Spring” so even if “The Winds of Winter” comes out before season eight, the fate of the aforementioned characters will no longer be a mystery.
