Fans of the fearless vigilante Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) will have to wait more months for his return. “The Punisher” season 2 is speculated to be released in 2019.
2018 has been a busy year for Netflix-streamed Marvel live-action franchises. On March 8, the second season of “Jessica Jones” came out, followed by the “Luke Cage” sequel on June 22 and “Iron Fist” season 2 in early September. This month, the third season of “Daredevil” is scheduled to be released as well. With this hectic lineup, Radio Times speculates that “The Punisher” season 2 might be strategically left out until 2019.
Regarding “The Punisher” season 2's production, filming reportedly concluded back in August. While there are some months left in 2018 that could be spent to finish the show’s post-production phase, a release date this year still seems unlikely.
The release date for all the abovementioned Marvel series had been set in stone within the first months of the year. Seeing that “The Punisher” season 2 is not yet included in the lineup just adds another reason to believe that it will not be released in 2018. However, early 2019 could be a different, more positive story.
Though the “The Punisher” season 2 official release date is still unknown, one major plot detail has been confirmed. Behind-the-scenes videos and photos affirmed that Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) will return.
Russo was once a dear friend to Castle. But, as the story goes in the comic books, he will become Castle’s archnemesis and will be known by the name Jigsaw. The villain is expected to debut in “The Punisher” season 2 as well.
Meanwhile, “The Punisher” season 2 is very likely to have 13 new episodes once it premieres. In an earlier interview with Collider, showrunner Steve Lightfoot explained why he prefers the 13-episode format for Marvel series streaming on Netflix.
“I always wanted it to be a slow burn show,” the “The Punisher” season 2 showrunner explained. “I always felt like we had the right amount for 13, and you’ve gotta have enough story for that but I like how slow burn and character-driven the shows are.”
