Tesla has announced a major milestone, producing its 100 millionth 4680 battery cell. The achievement comes just over three months after the electric vehicle maker reached 50 million cells, further advancing its production of the highly anticipated Cybertruck.
Tesla Produces 100 Million 4680 Battery Cells, Doubling Output in Just Over Three Months
Tesla has declared that it has manufactured its one hundred millionth 4680 battery cell in all its factories. The company announced it had produced 50 million 4680 cells just over three months before the update, per Teslarati.
The milestone was announced on Tesla's official social media account on X. In its post, Tesla included an image of its 100 millionth 4680 battery, held by an Optimus Gen 2 humanoid automaton.
Industry observers who have closely monitored the progression of Tesla's 4680 program were exceedingly impressed by the electric vehicle manufacturer's most recent achievement. Tesla recently disclosed that it had manufactured its 50 millionth 4680 cell at Giga, Texas, on June 5.
Tesla has produced an average of approximately 495,000 4680 cells per day, considering the 101 days since the June announcement. The average output of each Cybertruck is 1,344 4680 cells, which translates to a production capacity of approximately 368 Cybertrucks per day or 2,578 Cybertrucks per week.
This implies that Tesla could produce 33,514 Cybertrucks per quarter, or approximately 134,280 units of the all-electric pickup truck per year, based on the capacity of the 4680 battery cells, as estimated by Tesla battery enthusiast The Limiting Factor in a post on X.
Tesla Ramps Up Cybertruck Production as 4680 Battery Cell Program Gains Momentum
The electric vehicle manufacturer is rapidly increasing the production of the Cybertruck, as evidenced by recent aerial footage of the Giga Texas complex. However, recent projections suggest that Tesla is only just beginning to approach the production of 2,000 Cybertrucks per week.
This implies that the Cybertruck's production no longer impedes the supply of 4680 cells. Naturally, Tesla may also be stockpiling approximately 4680 cells in anticipation of the Cybertruck's production surge following the formal conclusion of the Foundation Series.
This year, Tesla's 4680 battery cell program has made remarkable progress. The 4680-cell program, announced at Tesla's 2020 Battery Day event, experienced significant delays. The company's critics even suggested that Elon Musk might abandon the entire program. However, a report from China earlier this year indicated that Tesla is ultimately planning to mass produce the "complete" version of the 4680 cell, which includes a dry positive and negative electrode, by the end of the year.
