Sweden’s retail sales edged lower in July compared with the previous month, although consumer spending remained significantly stronger than a year earlier, according to official data released on Friday.

Retail sales declined 0.2% month-on-month in July, Statistics Sweden reported. The modest decrease followed a stronger performance in June and indicates some cooling in retail activity after the previous month’s expansion.

Despite the monthly decline, Swedish retail sales increased 6.2% compared with July a year earlier. The solid annual growth suggests that consumer demand remains relatively resilient even as month-to-month spending patterns fluctuate.

Statistics Sweden also revised its retail sales figures for June substantially higher. Sales are now estimated to have increased 1.4% from May, compared with the previously reported monthly gain of 1.0%.

The annual growth rate for June was also upgraded. Retail sales rose 7.7% year-on-year during the month, significantly above the initial estimate of 6.6%.

The revised figures indicate that Sweden’s retail sector entered the third quarter following stronger momentum than previously thought. However, July’s 0.2% monthly contraction suggests that the rapid pace of growth seen in June did not continue into the following month.

Retail sales data are closely monitored as an indicator of household demand and broader economic conditions in Sweden. Consumer spending can play an important role in economic growth, while changes in retail activity may provide clues about household confidence and purchasing behavior.

The combination of a small monthly decline and robust year-on-year growth presents a mixed picture for Sweden’s retail economy. While July sales softened compared with June, they remained considerably above levels recorded during the same period last year.

Investors and economists will likely continue monitoring upcoming Swedish economic data to determine whether consumer demand can maintain its annual growth momentum in the coming months.
