“Steven Universe Future” marked the end of the animated series that was first launched in 2013. The show ran for seven years and the final 20 episodes were released under a new title.

Steven has grown and his transformation to becoming a mature teenager was highlighted in “Steven Universe Future.” The final episodes were meant to be an epilogue and it really did what it was supposed to do. Now, fans can see why they released “Future” because everything is clear now as all the questions that were raised after season 6 aired have been clarified.

The messages the series want to impart

Now, aside from clarifying a lot of things about Steven and his relationship with the gems and his friends, Rebecca Sugar actually sent a message for the viewers as well. Although they may not have realized it sooner, the finale of “Steven Universe Future” mainly sent an important message for mental health.

It can be recalled that Steven was struggling with his identity in the finale of “Steven Universe” season 6 and this personal struggles continued in “Steven Universe Future.” Many observers pointed out that Steven’s mental health issue was shown through the scenes that showed him having nightmares and he appeared to have been traumatized by the things that happened to him since he was a young boy.

His trauma haunts him in his dreams and he wakes up feeling scared. They said that this seems to suggest that Steven suffered and he even got depressed that he does not want his talk to his friends or family. He went through an identity crisis as well but he found answers later on.

“It’s taken a toll on Steven, being the protagonist of the show to whom everything happens, who is tasked with fixing everything and has to feel personally responsible for everything,” Rebecca Sugar, series creator and showrunner, told the Los Angeles Times. “For me ‘Future’ was about going on this journey through Steven with Steven and really unpacking everything that the show had been.”

Sugar also revealed that when she made “Steven Universe,” it was really based on her experience when she was bullied and heard racist comments. She said that she kept her mouth shut about her bitter experience for years until she created this animation.

She realized that one should properly deal with their trauma because that was the only way they could move on and cope with life ahead. This became the theme of series and in its finale in “Steven Universe Future,” she successfully sent the message to those suffering mentally to find peace again by facing their trauma head-on and looking for solutions that will help them heal.

The end of a great series

Steven Universe Future” gave the series a nice ending by wrapping it up beautifully. Steven is growing up and as he matures he learned to be independent and values himself more. Of course, he hasn’t forgotten about his friends and family; he knows that they will always be there for him whenever he needed a hand or even a shoulder to cry on.
