Recently, fans awaiting news about the upcoming sequel “Star Wars 9” were hyped after a suspected filming set photo reportedly appeared online. Unfortunately, the location pictured was actually for a different movie.
The photo in question (see below) was posted by Dan Mindel. He is a known cinematographer and often collaborates with J.J. Abrams, which led fans and media outlets to believe that one of his recent Instagram posts represents a filming set for “Star Wars 9.”
Mindel is also part of the “Star Wars 9” crew as the cinematographer alongside director Abrams. So when he posted an image last over the weekend, many fans assumed it was a sneak peek at the movie’s set. “Space lights ..... unbeatable quality source of ambient lighting...6000 watts 6 lamps or 3000 watts 3 lamps,” Mindel said.
ComicBook was one of the known online publications that reported on Mindel’s Instagram post. However, Star Wars News Net followed up with its own report to clarify that the filming set was for the 2012 film “John Carter” for which Mindel also worked as a cinematographer.
Star Wars News Net also provided a side-by-side photo of the filming set versus its post-production look to confirm that it was, indeed, used in “John Carter” and not for “Star Wars 9.” ComicBook and Star Wars News Net have since apologized for their earlier reports that may have confused many excited fans.
Meanwhile, it is safe to say that fans will have a hard time getting official sneak peeks at “Star Wars 9.” The movie will not be released until 2019, plus Disney and Lucasfilm are both known to be highly secretive and protective of the sequels’ plots.
On the other hand, that cannot stop avid fans from speculating about what will happen next. One popular belief is that Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) will return in “Star Wars 9.” Luckily, the fans did not have to wait long before this speculation was confirmed.
Last month, a report from The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Williams is joining the cast of “Star Wars 9.” It also seems that his return to the film series is imperative after fans were reminded of his charisma in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” where a younger Lando is portrayed by Donald Glover.
Previously, “Star Wars 9” was scheduled to premiere on a much earlier date, in May 2019. However, reports have it that it is now brought back to the franchise’s usual slot and will be released on Dec. 19, 2019.
