In 2016, DreamWorks announced that “Shrek 5” will indeed be happening. But three years later, the studio remained mum about when the next film will be released.
Even the stars involved in the production of “Shrek 5” is maintaining their silence as well. In fact, other Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Donkey, there are uncertainties surrounding the rest of the cast.
So will there be massive changes when it comes to the voices of “Shrek 5?” Absolutely not. Writer Christopher Meledandri previously said that although they’re looking to reinvent the entire franchise, one thing they’re not going to tamper with is the voice acting, Variety reported.
“When you look back on those vocal performances, they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels,” Meledandri said. Going by this statement, it’s safe to assume that Mike Myers and Antonio Banderas will be included in “Shrek 5.”
Cameron Diaz, on the other hand, is up in the air since news that she’s already retired has made its round on the web last year. Diaz initially hinted at this fact during a conversation she had with Christina Applegate and Selma Blair when the trio discussed a possible reunion for a sequel of “The Sweetest Thing.” However, it’s not clear whether the announcement was serious or was simply made in jest. The last time that Diaz made an appearance on the big screen was in 2014. If she’s really serious about walking away from Hollywood, then “Shrek 5” might not be seeing Fiona’s return.
As such, the film might have Shrek, Donkey, and Puss carrying the load, which will be more than enough to compel audiences to see the movie. So when is “Shrek 5” going to be released? Unfortunately, nothing has been confirmed so far.
It was initially speculated that it might come out this year, but DreamWorks hasn’t said anything as of this writing even though the script for it is already done. With 2019 already in its second half, it’s unlikely that we’ll see “Shrek 5” this year. But that is alright. For a franchise that was supposed to end in 2010, fans of the grouchy ogre are simply ecstatic that his adventures will continue. In what form that journey will take remains to be seen, however.
