Dreamworks confirmed that “Shrek 5” is in the works. The fifth sequel is part of the Comcast-NBCUniversal’s plan to get the studio back on track again. Comcast wants to produce many animated films and it is starting with the likes of “Shrek” and perhaps, “Kung Fu Panda.”
In the film lineup that NBCUniversal is planning for a reboot, “Shrek 5” will be the first to be put into production. And since this is a reboot, this animated movie will have a new writer for a fresh start. As per Collider, Michael McCullers was recruited to handle the fifth movie sequel of “Shrek.”
Talking about McCullers’ assignment as the new writer for “Shrek 5,” Mike Mitchell co-director in “Shrek 2” said that McCullers has many great ideas. “He came up with a really great idea that they’re exploring,” he said. With this detail, the viewers will see a different story that may be filled with twists and other explosive plots.
Moreover, Comcast-NBC Universal stated that moviegoers can expect fresh storylines in “Shrek 5” where the younger generation will be able to relate to. Perhaps, this means that the reinvented animated movie will show Shrek and Fiona’s kids have grown up already?
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,” Chris Meledandri, “Shrek 5” creator told Variety.
Release Date
Meanwhile, the premiere date of “Shrek 5” is still unknown. The movie is still in production so it may take time before Dreamworks or Comcast will make an announcement. Stay tuned as we will continue to give updates when a trailer, release date, and other details become available.
