“Sherlock” season 5 is one of those long-awaited drama comebacks on television but up to now, its producers still cannot say when it will arrive. Since there is very little information about the detective drama, various speculations began to emerge and some stories led fans to believe that it will be on air soon.
News like this excites and disappoints fans at the same time because, in the end, they realize that they are false reports. But will fans really see a “Sherlock” season 5? According to the show’s co-creator, Steven Moffat, “Sherlock” can still return but he can’t say when.
Speaking to Radio Times, he said, "Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock — we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways.”
He went on to add, “We haven't got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn't do it again."
The main actors' -- Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman -- schedules and alleged rift are reportedly the main reasons why “Sherlock” season 5 cannot go into production after season 4. None of the production staff confirmed this but some of the actors’ interviews seem to prove that there was indeed some conflict behind the camera.
In any case, co-showrunner Mark Gatiss revealed that they are not dismissing the idea of doing “Sherlock” season 5. However, he admitted that it is not possible to do it now or any time soon. Thus, if fans really want to see new episodes of the show, they may have to wait a few years more.
Gatiss shared this information when he was briefly interviewed during the premiere of “Christopher Robin” in August. He said they are not closing their doors to another “Sherlock” installment but since they are still busy with other projects like the filming of “Dracula,” they have to shelve it for a while.
“Sherlock” season 5 has to go into production first before its premiere date is confirmed and sadly, we cannot expect it to happen soon.
