Fans of the Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman modern retelling of the great British detective may have to keep waiting a little longer for news about “Sherlock” season 5. Fan anticipation for the series has gotten so bad that a rumor regarding production of the fifth season easily found its hold amongst the “Sherlock” fanbase.
The good news is that “Sherlock's” high-profile executive producers and writers, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, have expressed their interest in continuing with the show's fifth season at some undetermined point in the future. The show's writers have already confirmed that material has been planned for the fifth season as early as four years ago back.
The bad news is that the show's stars are locked up in different projects and feel that “Sherlock's” season 4 finale actually wrapped up the show particularly well. Benedict Cumberbatch, as reported by DigitalSpy, has said that there is the possibility that the show will not be as regular compared to the previous 4 seasons. Martin Freeman himself has had negative comments regarding fan reception for the season 4 finale as well as the negative aspects of his growing celebrity status.
Aside from the season 4 wrapup, both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are also involved with Marvel projects such as Cumberbatch's role as the titular Dr. Strange and Martin Freeman becoming a more significant character to the Marvel-verse in the recent “Black Panther” movie, which starred Chadwick Boseman.
But fans shouldn't be disheartened. “Sherlock” season 4 has already given us the older and widowed Dr. Watson. Sherlock himself has grown, becoming more empathetic and aware compared to the obsessive-compulsive recluse that we met in the show's first season. “Sherlock” is primed to create a fifth season, just not until Gatiss and Moffat actually give the official go-ahead for production to start.
While there is no confirmed date of production or broadcasting for “Sherlock” season 5, fans of the series can still catch Cumberbatch and Freeman as the British crime-solving duo on Netflix.
