“Sherlock” season 5 is not yet confirmed but there have been reports that it will still come and fans just have to wait for it may still take some time. Showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have not released any statement regarding the show’s return but both said there is still a chance for another season.
Speaking to Digital Spy last year, Steven Moffat said that they assumed that there will be “Sherlock” season 5 but they do not know when it will happen.
“I haven't really thought about it. Mark has been doing other stuff as well, so we haven't sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series," he said when asked about the fifth season.
Previously, Chris Georgiou, the owner of the café where the crew of “Sherlock” usually have their meals while filming, revealed (via Time Out) that he overheard that “Sherlock” season 5 may be back sooner than expected. But shortly after the news came out, Mark Gatiss denied the news.
As EconoTimes reported, the showrunner discredited Georgiou’s claim and said that what he said was “utter nonsense.” Ever since season 4 ended, the showrunners have kept mentioning their and the actors’ schedules are some of the major factors why “Sherlock” season 5 is still not in production.
They said that all of them are doing other jobs and shows, so it is hard for their schedules to meet. Thus, they cannot set a date for the next season.
But then again, in his recent interview on the On the Line podcast, Gatiss seemed to have changed his tune and aired a more positive response when asked about “Sherlock” season 5.
On Aug. 3, he said that the series may still return one day but warned it will not be anytime soon.
"We're certainly not ruling it out. We're shooting 'Dracula' next year, that's a two or three-year process to get that from script to screen,” he explained. “Even if we then started planning 'Sherlock' season 5 that would be another two years, so it's a way off."
If indeed “Sherlock” season 5 returns, it is most likely to arrive in the fall of the year it does. Meanwhile, while the fifth season is still being discussed, viewers can binge watch episodes on Netflix.
