The television series adaptation of the popular Young Adult novel “13 Reasons Why” is set to premiere on Netflix.
Actress and singer Selena Gomez, who is also a co-producer of the series, shared a teaser clip on her Instagram account. NME points out that given the fact that Gomez is the most followed person on Instagram, the teaser clip easily racked up over 5 million views, and counting. A longer trailer is also available as a series of Instagram Stories via Netflix’s official account.
“13 Reasons Why” explores the story of a teenager who was driven to committing suicide. Den of Geek said the series was inspired by Jay Asher’s best-selling novel. Written by Tony and Pulitzer Prize Winner Brian Yorkey of “Next to Normal” fame, it is directed by Tom McCarthy, who won an Oscar recently for “Spotlight.” Gomez, however, will not appear on the series. “13 Reasons Why” will premiere on Netflix on March 31.
The synopsis read, "13 Reasons Why is a new series from Netflix adapted from the best-selling books by Jay Asher. It follows teenager Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) as he returns home from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker (newcomer Katherine Langford) —his classmate and crush—who tragically committed suicide two weeks earlier. On tape, Hannah explains that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Will Clay be one of them? If he listens, he’ll find out how he made the list."
In a later post, Gomez also credited her mother for getting the novel adapted to the small screen. Her post read, “This was the day I was nervous as hell going into @Netflix for the first time to talk about @13reasonswhy -my mom found this book in 2009 and worked her ass off to make it with me, guide me and tell this story authentically (the only reason, beside Jay this project was even made).”
