When online movie streaming giant Netflix finally allowed users to download and store movies on their mobile devices to be viewed offline, it was a source of both joy and apprehension. On the one hand, constant internet access is no long necessary to enjoy all those amazing original content. Unfortunately, not everyone had gigabytes of internal memory to spare. Now, Netflix is finally allowing content storage in microSD cards.
Although the prospect of being able to watch Netflix shows on the train or on the plane without having to worry about internet access might be great, some of the movies or TV shows available do come in huge file sizes. This means that at best, users will only have a limited library to choose from, or at worst, won’t be able to download any at all. Thanks to the update for the Netflix app, this is no longer a problem, The Verge reports.
By allowing Android users to store the movies or TV shows via microSD cards, they can make use of considerably more storage space than what their devices have. More than that, if the cards run out of space, all they really need to do is replace it with one that has more memory.
After bringing up the app, users will be able to access the option to save the files in their external memory unit by simply tapping on the Download Location tab. This option will be available after updating the app to version 4.13 or downloading the app via the Google Play store, Android Headlines reports.
It should be noted that even with the expandable memory storage option, the downloaded content does have an expiration date. How long the users have before the content is no longer available for offline viewing depends on the title, but eventually, they will have to be downloaded again.
