SK Telecom Expands Metaverse Biz in Southeast Asia

SK Telecom, the prominent Korean mobile carrier, has announced its strategic alliance with leading information technology companies from three Southeast Asian nations to expand its metaverse business. The company revealed this development on Monday.

SK Telecom's Collaboration for Metaverse Expansion

Korea Times reported that to augment and refine the ifland platform in Southeast Asia, SK Telecom has entered into memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with Celcom Digi from Malaysia, Agate from Indonesia, and Cosmic Technologies from the Philippines. As per the company officials, this collaboration will enable SK Telecom to focus on delivering global services, while its partners will concentrate on developing locally customized content and extending support to local customers.

Since July, SK Telecom has been conducting localization tests for the ifland platform in the Southeast Asian market, according to Korea Bizwire. The company is currently actively developing Indonesian, Malaysian, and Hindi language services for the platform, along with a content curation service tailored to users from diverse regions.

The ifland metaverse service by SK Telecom was introduced across 49 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East last year.

Focus on Platform Enrichment and Service Customization

The platform currently supports three languages: English, Japanese, and Chinese. Furthermore, SK Telecom is working on introducing Indonesian, Malaysian, and Hindi language services to cater to a broader user base.

In its pursuit of global expansion, SK Telecom has formed partnerships with several international telecom companies for metaverse business ventures. Previous MOUs have been established with a telecom company in the United Arab Emirates, Singtel from Singapore, and NTT Docomo from Japan.

Additionally, SK Telecom is collaborating with BSRU (Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University) from Thailand and Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts from Korea for a metaverse campus project in facilitating the sharing of online lectures in English, Thai, and Korean between these universities.
