Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang has declared that artificial general intelligence, or AGI, has arrived, pointing to OpenAI’s newly launched GPT-6 Astra as a major milestone in the accelerating development of artificial intelligence.
“AGI has arrived,” Huang wrote in a post on X on Sunday as he congratulated OpenAI on the release of its latest AI model.
OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as its most intelligent and aligned model to date, highlighting strong performance across software engineering, computer use, cybersecurity, scientific research and professional tasks. The launch adds to growing competition among technology companies seeking to develop increasingly capable frontier AI systems.
Huang also highlighted the enormous computing infrastructure behind Astra. According to the Nvidia chief, OpenAI trained the model using more than 100,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems, demonstrating the scale of computing power required to build advanced AI models.
“From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years,” Huang wrote. He added that another 400,000 Nvidia GPUs are coming online, signaling continued expansion of the infrastructure supporting next-generation AI development.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman has similarly suggested that GPT-6 Astra could represent the beginning of the AGI era. However, artificial general intelligence remains loosely defined, with researchers and technology companies lacking a universally accepted benchmark for determining when AGI has been achieved.
OpenAI reported that Astra delivered exceptionally high scores across several advanced AI evaluations. The company said the model achieved 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and a perfect 100% score on ExploitBench.
Huang’s comments underscore Nvidia’s central role in the global AI boom. Its high-performance GPUs and Blackwell computing systems have become critical infrastructure for companies developing frontier AI models, including OpenAI.
The launch of GPT-6 Astra and Huang’s AGI declaration could further intensify debate over how quickly AI capabilities are advancing and what technical benchmarks should ultimately define artificial general intelligence.
