"The Sopranos" star Robert Iler has spoken out about his opinions regarding “Top Gun: Maverick,” claiming that the film wrecked the film business. The sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun sees Tom Cruise reprise his role as Maverick, who trains a new generation of Navy aviators.
The film garnered positive reviews and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Sound at the 95th Academy Awards. The sequel to 1986's Top Gun was underwhelming for Robert, despite being nominated for six Academy Awards.
Robert Iler Likens Tom Cruise’s Film to Garbage
Robert critiqued the film's opening hour in particular, claiming that most of the interest stemmed from recognizing Tom in the lead role. He spends most of the footage disputing with the presenter and producer over the film's quality, demonstrating how far his perspective is from the mainstream. This is worsened by the film's financial success, which grossed $1.496 billion at the box office.
“I think Top Gun [Maverick] ruined the whole movie industry. No, no, no, I think it ruined everything. It'll save it for four or five years because people are like, 'Oh this is sh—!' It's like eating f—ing McDonald's or eating f—ing trash food. And then, all of a sudden, people are gonna turn around in four years and go, 'Why do I feel bad?' Because you're watching garbage f—ing movies! And just like a f—ing McDonald's thing does for 15 minutes, and then all of a sudden you're going, 'Oh, wait a minute,'” Robert stated during his recent appearance on the “Not Today, Pal” podcast.
The ”Tadpole” actor even compared “90 Day Fiance” to Tom Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick.” “90 Day Fiancé is f—ing great. Because nobody is putting 90 Day Fiancé up for a f—ing Oscar. You go, 'Hey, do you wanna watch a s— TV show? Watch 90 Day Fiancé!' We know what it is,” Robert said.
Will There Be Another ‘Top Gun’ Movie?
Despite Robert’s criticisms of the film, the success of “Top Gun: Maverick” suggests that a “Top Gun 3” movie will be made in the future, per Screenrant. Because the picture has just been out for 18 months, it is unclear what influence it will have on emerging film ideas.
However, if other sequels for various concepts are developed, it's possible that the film will affect how legacy sequels are addressed. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise has yet to comment on Robert Iler’s remarks about the “Top Gun: Maverick” movie.
