Reddit is introducing a new feed that its users spend time exploring aside from their home page. The new feature, called a Discover tab, is designed to help Redditors easily find new communities and subreddits to join.
The new feature was announced on Thursday, with Reddit noting that it is the social media platform’s first new feed introduced in almost two years. The company also noted that one out of five users were able to find at least one new community to join after scrolling through the Discover tab.
Once the update is available on their end, users will find a new compass icon beside the home button on the bottom bar of the Reddit mobile app. The communities that will be displayed in the new feed are based on the subreddits that users have already joined or based on the communities that they have previously explored on the platform.
“For example, if a redditor subscribes to and spends a significant amount of time in football and baseball subs, Discover Tab will prompt them with other sports-related content,” Reddit said in the announcement post. Per the preview images, Reddit shared, there will be a suggestion bar on top of the feed filled with various topics so users can filter what type of communities they want to find.
However, if users find any content in the Discover tab that does not interest them, they can help Reddit refine the suggestions by selecting “show me more of this content, show me less of that content, and hide that content” from the feedback options.
With Reddit users possibly joining a number of new communities following the release of Discover Tab, the company has also introduced new features called Community and Profile Drawers that should help Redditors better organize the subreddits they have joined.
Users are already familiar with most of the contents of the Profile Drawer. In this update, though, Reddit is moving the profile tab on the other side of the app’s screen. Users can open the Profile Drawer by swiping left to access settings and customization options.
The Community Drawers, as the name suggests, serves as a one-stop section where Reddit users can access the communities and Redditors they follow. It will have a drop-down menu that can have up to four sections, including dedicated pages for the communities they follow and subreddits they moderate.
