Qantas Airways is preparing to launch its highly anticipated nonstop Sydney-to-London flights in October next year, introducing a range of wellness-focused features designed to make ultra-long-haul travel more comfortable and reduce the effects of jet lag.
The Australian airline’s Project Sunrise initiative will operate on specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, offering journeys that could last up to 22 hours. Qantas also plans to introduce nonstop flights between Sydney and New York as part of the program.
To improve passenger wellbeing during these record-breaking flights, Qantas collaborated with sleep and health experts to develop scientifically backed strategies. According to Professor Peter Cistulli from the University of Sydney, managing the body’s response to crossing multiple time zones was a key focus. Research found that carefully timed meals, strategic lighting, and protected sleep periods helped travelers remain more alert compared to traditional long-haul flight services.
A standout feature of the new aircraft is a dedicated “wellness zone,” designed to encourage movement and relaxation during the journey. The space will feature calming ambient lighting intended to create a soothing atmosphere. Throughout the cabin, advanced mood lighting systems will simulate natural sunrise and sunset cycles to help passengers adjust their body clocks more effectively.
Passenger comfort remains a major priority. Economy-class seats will offer a pitch of up to 33 inches, while an “Economy Plus” section will provide 34 inches of legroom. Premium cabins will include enclosed first-class suites with separate beds, targeting travelers willing to pay more for enhanced comfort.
Qantas expects the nonstop services to command a fare premium over traditional one-stop routes. The airline believes demand will be driven by travelers seeking convenience, reduced travel time, and the ability to avoid lengthy airport layovers.
While some passengers have expressed concerns about ticket prices and comfort on such lengthy flights, others see significant value in eliminating stopovers and simplifying international travel. Qantas hopes the combination of innovative cabin design, wellness technology, and time savings will make its nonstop Sydney-London and future Sydney-New York routes a unique offering in the global aviation market.
