The latest episode of “Outlander” season 4 is extra special because of the surprise return of Murtagh Fraser (Duncan Lacroix). While he is still the well-loved father figure to Jamie (Sam Heughan), his political affiliations in America might cause danger to his godson and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) in the long run.
“Outlander” season 4 writers did not waste any time with Murtagh and immediately revealed a brewing conflict rooting from his involvement with the Regulator Movement. It can be recalled that the governor awarded Jamie with thousands of acres of land under the promise that he will help crackdown the Regulators.
Obviously, Jamie will not wish harm on Murtagh. Though he needed to decline Murtagh’s offer of joining the Regulators, Jamie promised to let him pursue his cause. But it is important to note that a huge war is coming up in “Outlander” season 4. It is unlikely for Jamie to turn on Murtagh, but it might also cause harm for him, Claire, and Ian (John Bell).
“To have this cantankerous old man in his life is also going to cause some trouble. They’re on either sides of the Regulators. It really is setting up other seasons now, with the war that’s coming,” Heughan told TVLine. Meanwhile, in Duncan Lacroix’s own interview, he did confirm to Vulture that being one of the Regulators is the focus of Murtagh’s arc in “Outlander” season 4.
The Regulators plot line also appears to be closely tied to the major storyline — the Revolutionary War. “It's just the beginning of a major plot, the Revolutionary War that's fast approaching. You can guess what's going to happen and we're going to see that through to the end where [Jamie and Murtagh will] be on opposite sides. It's going to create a real dilemma for both of these characters,” Heughan told the Hollywood Reporter. New episodes of “Outlander” season 4 are out every Sunday at 8 p.m. on Starz.
