OnePlus fans saw the brand expanding its lineup of smartphones with the launch of cheaper handsets under the Nord series. The company has been rumored to release follow-up devices for the product line this year, but it appears that the reported OnePlus Nord SE was canceled while the OnePlus Nord 2 remains in the pipeline.
OnePlus Nord 2 release date, specs: What to expect
It has only been a few days since the OnePlus 9 series was unveiled, but the smartphone maker is already making headlines for its anticipated mid-range offerings this year. But there is good news and bad news in the OnePlus Nord department this week.
The good news is leaker Max Jambor reports on Voice that the OnePlus Nord 2, codenamed Denniz, has been in development for some months now. It appears that nothing has changed in terms of the company’s plan to launch the device down the line, so tech fans might witness an announcement soon.
There is no word yet on the release date or launch window for the OnePlus Nord 2. But the same source speculates, based on the first Nord’s launch date and the earlier announcement of the OnePlus 9 series, the next mid-range phone could be revealed “in less than 5 months.” In that case, OnePlus could reveal the handset sometime in August.
Other reports suggest that the OnePlus Nord 2 could feature a significant change from its predecessor. The first Nord phone was launched with Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. But the next device is rumored to be powered by the 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chip.
One of the selling points of the OnePlus 9 series is its fast charging capabilities advertised at 65W on wired charging, while the OnePlus 9 Pro features a 50W fast wireless charging. OnePlus might want to reserve these functions for its premium phones, so the Nord 2 can maintain a 30W fast charging feature just like its predecessor.
OnePlus Nord SE: What could have been
As for the bad news, Jambor also reported that the OnePlus Nord SE has been canceled. The tipster first reported about the device last December hinting that it could share similar features and technical specifications with the original Nord, but with a different design.
Jambor added that the OnePlus Nord SE was initially planned for late 2020 or early 2021 launch. But the company’s plans reportedly changed and the “SE” phone is no longer lined up for a public presentation.
