“New Amsterdam” season 2 is now being anticipated after the shocking finale of the show’s maiden season. The first season wrapped up with an explosive cliffhanger where people were hurt, and someone is missing so clearly a new installment is called for.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, “New Amsterdam” season 2 has been renewed, and it was announced in February, three months before the first season concluded. This only proved that the medical drama achieved success as also shown in its viewership ratings. The drama is the leading show in its timeslot on Tuesday nights.
On its renewal announcement, Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, co-presidents in programming at NBC Entertainment, said in a statement, "We've been so excited to see how much audiences have embraced Dr. Max Goodwin and all the characters that make New Amsterdam such an incredibly compelling medical series. Congratulations to the executive producers David Schulner, Peter Horton, our writers and an amazing cast and crew who have brought these stories to life."
What to Expect in Next Installment
EP Peter Horton revealed some insights on what is to come when “New Amsterdam” season 2 returns. Commenting on the first season’s finale, New York Post quoted the EP as saying, “Initially we were thinking much more humbly about the last episode and kicking around various ideas. We got encouragement from NBC to go bigger, and by the time we started prepping the episode, we realized we’d created a monster.
He further hinted that “New Amsterdam” season 2 could feature flashbacks after the epic ambulance crash in season 1’s final episode. “Here we are with a show that rarely does any stunts or special effects other than prosthetics and medical stuff and we’re gonna go out with an ambulance crash and flashback to a pipe bomb going off in a club," Horton said.
In any case, “New Amsterdam” season 2 will pick up exactly from where it left off in the finale. Max (Ryan Eggold) survived the crash, but his battle with cancer will continue. Baby Luna also survived, but Georgia (Lisa O’Hare) is unconscious, and Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) is nowhere to be seen in the site of the accident. Their fate will be revealed in the next sequel.
“The ambulance crash forced us to think about the injuries each character sustained and how that would play out over next season,” co-executive producer David said. “The way Peter directed it, every place, every character and where they ended up after the crash was very deliberate because it affects their arc in Season 2.”
Finally, Schulner and Horton also mentioned that some people survived, but at least two people will die. Fans will get answers immediately in the first episode of “New Amsterdam” season 2.
