Naver Corp. and Intel Corporation have forged an alliance to work on the development of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chips. The companies agreed to cooperate on building an AI chip ecosystem in South Korea.
Contract Signing for the Team-Up
Naver's cloud computing unit, Naver Cloud, and Intel will establish an AI semiconductor research institute as part of the collaboration. Moreover, Pulse News reported that this partnership is also an effort to form a united front to fight Nvidia's dominance in the AI semiconductor industry. The companies will now join the steep competition in the global market.
During the Intel Vision 2024 event in Phoenix, Arizona, the companies signed their agreement earlier this week. Intel hosted this event, which provides insights into the latest trends in the tech industry, data centers, and cloud computing.
New R&D Hub Soon to Rise in Korea
Intel and Naver Cloud will set up a new research and development (R&D) center in South Korea. According to Korea Joongang Daily, startups and about 20 well-known, prestigious educational institutions, such as the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), Seoul National University, and Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech), are expected to participate in the Project.
"There aren't many companies worldwide that have developed and are operating a large language model from scratch like Naver Cloud," Kim Yoo Won, Naver Cloud's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "Naver has been providing users with diverse choices in markets centered around global Big Tech such as search engines, cloud services, and generative AI, over the past 25 years,"
The CEO added, "This commitment to diversity is one of the core values that the company upholds. In this context, we believe that fostering diversity in the current AI chip ecosystem holds significant importance."
