Minnesota Wildfires Spread as Governor Tim Walz Deploys National Guard

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime emergency and activated the state National Guard to help combat fast-growing wildfires burning along the state's northern border with Canada.

According to Minnesota state officials, the fires have scorched more than 800 acres over the past five days and remain uncontained. The blazes are part of a broader wave of wildfires affecting several parts of the United States, fueled by hot, dry weather conditions linked to the El Niño climate pattern.

Governor Walz announced the emergency response on Sunday, saying the National Guard would support ongoing wildfire suppression efforts in northern Minnesota. The largest concentration of fires is in the Superior National Forest, where 16 active wildfires are currently burning. The popular recreation area typically welcomes around 150,000 visitors during the summer season. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as firefighters battle difficult conditions. High temperatures and dry weather over the weekend significantly increased wildfire risk, according to the National Weather Service, making containment efforts more challenging.
