Once again migrant crisis sent shockwaves across Europe’s current political class as far right party, secured an unexpected big win. Far right freedom party’s presidential candidate Norbert Hofer won more than 35% of the vote. This is a major upset for Austria’s existing political class, where two party system has dominated since 1945. These two established party’s candidates have polled at only 11%. Final vote will be scheduled on May 22nd.
Frustrations are quite clear across Europe. Few weeks ago, Dutch people rejected a trade-pact with Ukraine in a referendum but European Union, anyway moved ahead with it. The more the current political parties ignore the warning signs, greater will be their peril.
Rightwing populists are already on the rise across Europe, and if they come to power across continents, then several issues like European integrities, austerities, Euro, immigrations, all will be in jeopardy.
In French Election next year, Socialist incumbent Francois Hollande is expected to lose to right wing nationalist marine Le Pen, whereas in Germany itself rightwing, Alternative for Germany (AFD) party is already eating into Merkel’s vote bank.
With such back lash expect European partners to exert more pressure on Germany’s Chancellor over her open door policy towards migrants.
Germany already lost large chunk of its influence over its European partners (as seen from Austria’s unilateral border control) and it is likely to lose a lot more over the coming years.
