President Donald Trump is now gearing up for his 2020 reelection campaign. This time, however, First Lady Melania Trump will have a larger role to play in his campaign compared to her contributions in the 2016 elections.
During Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign, Melania Trump frequently turned down requests for her appearance. According to Kate Bennett, the author of the FLOTUS’s unauthorized biography, her frequent refusals led Trump’s campaign advisers to eventually stop requesting for her presence, according to Express.
As a result, it was Donald Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka who stepped in and became the face of his family during his 2016 campaign. But this time, Melania is poised to have a larger campaign presence in Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, according to CNN.
In fact, the FLOTUS is already scheduled for at least two fundraising events this spring to support the Trump Victory Fund, which is a joint PAC between the Republican National Committee and the Trump 2020 campaign. Both fundraisers take place in March with one to be held at Mar-a-Lago and the other one somewhere in Los Angeles.
“First lady Melania Trump is a sought-after voice from the first family, who has the overwhelming approval and admiration of the American people,” Trump campaign national press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.
Melania Trump will have a very important role to play in Trump’s reelection campaign. “First ladies can humanize their husbands, that's what Laura Bush and Michelle Obama did well,” CNN contributor Kate Andersen Brower said.
This ability to humanize a president will especially be helpful for the image of Donald Trump who is sometimes seen as gruff and brusque. “They can poke fun at their husbands and bring them down to earth, both behind closed doors and for voters,” she added. Brower is also the author of “First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies.”
The FLOTUS actually completes Donald Trump’s appeal to voters. “I think part of Donald Trump's appeal in 2016 was his lifestyle: the private planes, the penthouse, and the model wife,” Brower explained.
Melania would be very effective in smaller events that involve young people and their families. “She shines when she's with children and she seems much less aloof,” Brower added.
