This year’s N7 Day went by and, as fans expected, BioWare shared a new, small teaser for the still-in-development “Mass Effect 5.” Shortly after the teaser went live, fans were able to decode it, revealing cryptic lines uttered by Liara T’Soni.
The official “Mass Effect” page on Twitter shared a 25-second clip on Monday, but its audio is inaudible and was only filled with static sounds. BioWare encouraged fans to look into it, which later revealed that the clip was hiding what appears to be a conversation between Liara (voiced by Ali Hillis) and a geth.
"I can see it. How did we miss this?" Liara asks the geth. "Exactly, the Council will be furious. Although, they should know by now not to underestimate human defiance." The same clip also shows an image of a Mass Relay in the works.
Unfortunately, the teaser does not provide more clues about the story that will unfold in “Mass Effect 5.” It only led to questions on why Liara is in communication with the geth and what new title she is going to assume in the upcoming game, as hinted in a separate tweet from project director Michael Gamble.
BioWare confirmed in its N7 Day blog post that “Mass Effect 5,” which the developer only officially refers to as the next “Mass Effect,” is still in pre-production. While the studio said, this phase “has been proceeding very well,” pre-production is where the initial works for an upcoming game take place. This could mean that the project has yet to enter the actual production stage of its development, suggesting that it will still take a while before the game’s launch.
It is then not surprising that, to this day, BioWare has not provided specific details about the “Mass Effect 5” gameplay and story. And the game’s launch timeline remains a mystery.
“The team, comprised of ‘Mass Effect’ franchise veterans as well as some amazing new additions to BioWare™, has grown steadily,” the developer said in a small update about the game. “They’ve been hard at work crafting new characters and locations that you’ll love, as well as revisiting many that you’ll remember.”
