A new report suggests Apple fans can expect at least one Mac device with an upgraded chipset to be announced at the company's spring launch event rumored to take place next month. That device is expected to be a new MacBook Pro powered by a new Apple silicon currently referred to as M2.
Many expected Apple to announce a new generation of its in-house SoC last year. It did not happen, though, as the company only launched expansions of the M1 chipset called M1 Max and M1 Pro. But the launch of the M2 chip could be weeks away as DigiTimes reports (via MacRumors) that Apple would announce an upgraded MacBook Pro next month.
Apple usually unveils a new generation of MacBook Pro in October or November. But the rumored announcement of the M2-powered MacBook Pro in the spring makes sense considering its only major upgrade is the new chipset. The same report claimed “most other components used” on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro released last fall will be retained in the upcoming device.
Supply chain sources told the publication that Apple suppliers for MacBook Pro parts kept their manufacturing operations rolling through the Lunar New Year to meet the demands for the upcoming Mac notebook. Aside from the chipsets, both 2021 MacBook Pro models feature Liquid Retina XDR display (with mini-LED backlighting) and a new 1080p webcam with FaceTime HD support. It also sports an SDXC card slot, HDMI port, MagSafe 3 port for charging, and three USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Apple has yet to announce plans for its anticipated spring launch event. However, it has been reported that the product announcements would take place on Tuesday, March 8. The tech giant is also expected to announce a new generation of iPhone SE with 5G support and iPad Air at the event.
Meanwhile, the upgraded MacBook Pro is unlike the only Mac device Apple will announce this year. It can be recalled that the company’s two-year plan to fully adopt Apple silicon ends in late 2022. Among other Mac devices rumored to be released this year is a new iMac Pro with an Apple chipset, Mac mini, and the redesigned MacBook Air.
