The upcoming months are starting to look ever more jam-packed with Apple product announcements. The tech giant is expected to unveil a redesigned Mac mini, and a reliable source reported that it could arrive soon.
Unlike other Apple products, the Mac mini does not usually get an update within a year or so, but that could be changed for the next desktop computer. It can be recalled that the 2020 Mac mini was one of the first devices to launch with the first-ever Apple Silicon SoC called M1, along with MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. But Apple continues to sell the 2018 Mac mini powered by Intel Core i5 and i7 chips.
In the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s newsletter Power On, the Bloomberg reporter noted (via MacRumors) that Apple did not let go of its Intel-based Mac mini yet because “many people use it as a software development machine, as a server or for their video editing needs.” But Gurman suggested that Apple may have the perfect replacement coming “in the next several months” once the “high-end, M1X Mac mini” enters the market.
In previous reports, Gurman mentioned that the M1X Mac mini is expected to launch not long after the release of M1X MacBook Pros. The latter is highly anticipated to be announced and released this fall. But it was interesting that the recent report did not definitively mention that the upgraded Mac mini is part of Apple’s fall 2021 announcements. While it is a possibility, it appears that the new Mac mini’s launch could be pushed to early next year.

As for the Mac mini redesign, Apple fans can revisit an earlier report from well-known leaker Jon Prosser. The upcoming product is expected to sport a reflective finish with more ports than its M1-powered predecessor. A render based on leaked images created by Ian Zelbo suggests that the next Mac mini will have four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C), two USB-A, HDMI, and Ethernet ports.
These are practically the same ports available in the latest Intel-based Mac mini. However, the M1 version launched with fewer options as it only featured two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports.
