LG Electronics Inc. launched its latest line of upgradable home appliances on Tuesday, powered by an advanced operating system and AI chipset. The move signifies LG's strategic shift towards becoming a "smart life solutions provider," offering personalized, service-based experiences.
Developed over three years, the new OS and chipset empower consumers to personalize and optimize their home devices while facilitating seamless addition, upgrade, and deletion of features as per individual preferences.
With the introduction of Upgradable Appliances 2.0, LG takes a significant step in expanding its home appliance portfolio into a service-based business, as highlighted by Lyu Jae-cheol, head of LG Electronics' home appliance and air solutions division.
Notably, LG shifted its focus from a product-oriented approach to prioritizing enhanced consumer experiences when it first introduced upgradable appliances in January last year.
Through the innovative smart home ThinQ application, customers can effortlessly update their home appliances and enjoy new features without purchasing entirely new products. LG has successfully launched a diverse range of over 60 upgradeable products.
The initial lineup of Upgradable Appliances 2.0 features a brand-new washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, and air purifier. LG plans to expand its product offering in the future gradually. Furthermore, Upgradable Appliances 2.0 introduces a subscription-based model, an essential element of LG's long-term vision to become a comprehensive life solutions provider. Recognizing the limitations of a one-time sales model, LG expects that more than half of its home electronics will be sold through subscription plans.
As part of its commitment to redefine the boundaries of traditional home electronics, LG embraces the concept of "servitization." By leveraging partnerships with local home service providers, such as LaundryGo, LG aims to liberate consumers from household chores and allow them to reclaim their precious time.
LG's endeavors to combine cutting-edge technology, customer-centric design, and service-based solutions reflect its unwavering dedication to delivering a more enriching, hassle-free lifestyle experience.
