Kakao Mobility has entered a strategic partnership with Vietnamese conglomerate, Vingroup and its electric vehicle subsidiary, VinFast. The collaboration aims to develop electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous driving technologies while also improving the infrastructure for EV charging stations, according to an official announcement.
Korea Economic Daily reported that Vingroup is the No. 1 company in Vietnam and the biggest Information and Kakao Mobility is collaborating with this group to produce EVs and charging station infrastructure.
The deal also includes an agreement with FPT Software, a leading communication technology (ICT) company in Southeast Asia. It was mentioned that the mobility firm would provide technologies, including high-precision maps for self-driving services, to VinFast, a Vietnamese electric car manufacturer and a subsidiary of the Vingroup.
Moreover, Kakao Mobility also expressed interest in personnel exchange and cooperation in startup investment with FPT Software which has about 30,000 ICT employees. They will establish a long-term partnership system, like building industrial-academia links with major universities in Vietnam.
"I think that it's meaningful to represent Korean ICT companies in discussing cooperation plans with Vietnam's largest company Vingroup and FPT," Ryu Gun Seong, Kakao Mobility's chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The deal was signed in Vietnam during President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent visit there. Kakao Mobility was part of the Korean president's economic delegation. "Kakao Mobility expects to provide innovative transportation services to tourists coming to both countries by sharing the company's know-how on building a successful platform," Ryu also said at that time. "Through continuous cooperation with local platforms and startups, Kakao Mobility will export Korea's IT and successful experiences."
Meanwhile, Tech in Asia further reported that the agreement between the companies mentioned plans to incorporate the Green and Smart Mobility (GSM) electric taxi rental platform within Vingroup's network and with Kakao T's ride-hailing service.
