KT Corp. is adding more uses for its autonomous delivery robots and recently revealed these will be deployed to the camping grounds. The company is teaming up with camping service startups for its new robot delivery service business for outdoor settings.
According to The Korea Economic Daily, KT Corp. tapped two local companies for collaboration. The deal will allow the South Korean telecom giant to get orders from campers through QR codes. The partnership follows after the company launched its self-driving delivery service robots for campgrounds.
The company said this week that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Camping Talk startup camping platform and Camping Outdoor, a construction company, for the expansion of its outdoor autonomous robot unit.
Camping Talk operates in South Korea and offers site search, reservation, and payment services for camping locations. It is affiliated with around 450 partner companies across the country; thus, the deal is a good decision.
On the other hand, Camping Outdoor’s specialty is building spots ideal for camping, glamping, and other upscale camping activities. It is operating a glamping site of considerable size which reportedly covers 33,000 square meters of land in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province.
KT Corp. launched its outdoor self-driving robots not long ago, and the machines provide good services at glamping, picnic locations, and cafes. Customers simply place orders using the QR code found inside their tents, and the robots deliver their items to the place.
Aju Business Daily reported that KT Corp. said it would work on making its robot services popular at campsites. Camping is gaining a lot of attention in South Korea lately, so the deployment of delivery robots on the sites came just in time since more and more people are booking places for their camping getaways with friends or families.
"We hope that the outdoor autonomous robot service created through the cooperation of three companies will become a starting point and create a new market in the domestic robot industry," Lee Sang Ho, head of KT's AI robot business group, said in a statement on March 14.
