Amazon Prime Video’s plan for “Jack Ryan” season 3 was made known even before the second season was released. However, other details about the third installment, such as the returning cast, are not set in stone yet.
There is no doubt that John Krasinski will reprise his titular role, but the same cannot be said for the other cast members. Fans who have watched the eight new episodes know that even the return of Wendell Pierce’s James Greer in “Jack Ryan” season 3 is not guaranteed yet.
'Jack Ryan' season 3: Is Greer going to retire?
In the season 2 finale, several striking scenes between Jack and Greer were seemingly foreshadowing the latter’s exit. While Jack has been jumping from one continent to another in all eight episodes of season 2, Greer was not having an easy time.
Unlike the typical senior officers in action films, Greer was never tied to the desk and has been on the field with Jack through the crucial moments since season 1. However, the senior CIA agent was held captive and tortured by the bad guys of season 2. In the end, the character appeared to have recognized that his health conditions and recent experiences may not allow him to avoid riding the desk for the remainder of his career. That is if he would not fully retire in “Jack Ryan” season 3.
Pierce’s role is one of the foundational characters of the series, and it does not feel right not to give him a formal farewell like what the show did with Abbie Cornish’s Dr. Cathy Mueller. It is then safe to expect Greer’s return in “Jack Ryan” season 3, but his participation in the field might not be the same if the series would directly pick up the pieces from season 2’s finale.
‘Jack Ryan’ season 3 cast, possible release date: Who would return with Jack and Greer?
It has also yet to be announced if other season 2 characters would be working alongside Jack’s next mission in “Jack Ryan” season 3. Aside from Jack and Greer, Mike November (Michael Kelly) and Harriet "Harry" Baumann (Noomi Rapace) also had major roles in the second installment.
“Jack Ryan” season 3 is already confirmed. But if filming would not commence this year, new episodes might not stream in 2020.
