India is taking significant steps to regulate deepfake content, as announced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the country's IT Minister. This initiative comes in response to the increasing spread of deepfakes and AI-manipulated media on social media platforms.
The decision, which aims to address the challenges posed by such technology, was shared on Thursday following a series of discussions with major social media companies, industry experts, and academics.
Formulating Strategies Against Deepfakes
The Indian government, recognizing the need for more stringent measures, is actively working on drafting regulations to combat the spread of deepfakes. These measures are not just about limiting their proliferation but also about holding creators accountable. The ministry plans to introduce "clear actionable items" within the next 10 days, including possible monetary fines for non-compliance and responsibility for individuals creating these videos.
Collaboration with Social Media Companies
Vaishnaw highlighted that social media companies have acknowledged the severity of the issue and agreed on the necessity for heavier regulation. A follow-up meeting with these companies is scheduled for early December to further discuss the matter. This collaborative approach aims to create a comprehensive framework to effectively address the challenges posed by deepfake technology.
Understanding Deepfakes and Their Impact
Deepfakes use advanced AI techniques to realistically alter or replace a person's appearance or voice in media. While sometimes used for entertainment, these manipulations raise ethical concerns about consent and misinformation.
