Imagination Technologies, once a powerhouse in the GPU market, has secured $100 million in funding to revitalize its operations and focus on AI development. With a new leadership team and a strong emphasis on software, the company aims to reestablish itself as a key player in the AI industry.
Imagination Technologies Secures $100 Million to Revitalize AI Development and Reclaim Industry Leadership
A prominent semiconductor designer, Imagination Technologies, has secured substantial funding to commence operations and develop native technologies to satisfy the increasing demand for AI, per Wccftech.
Imagination Technologies once hailed as the "NVIDIA" of the late 20th century, gained prominence for its PowerVR GPUs, which were widely adopted in desktop and mobile markets. Apple was a significant collaborator with the GPU manufacturer. However, the company’s fortunes began declining in 2017 when Apple decided to forgo Imagination’s GPUs in favor of its custom solutions. Subsequently, Canyon Bridge, a Chinese equity firm, acquired the company, leading to a resurgence of popularity in China.
Imagination Technologies is now poised to make significant strides in the AI peripheral segment, having undergone a leadership overhaul and made concerted efforts to advance its GPU IP technologies. The company recently received $100 million from Fortress Investment Group, a boost aimed at revitalizing its operations, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence.
Imagination Technologies Focuses on AI Software Ecosystem to Compete with NVIDIA's CUDA and Boost Market Position
Imagination’s strategy to capitalize on the AI boom strongly emphasizes the software side. Their GPU IPs are already optimized for data transfer and power efficiency, positioning them well in the market. Tim Mamtora, Chief of Innovation and Engineering, stated, “There are two ways to approach [AI]: either take something NPU-like and make it more general, sacrificing some PPA, or start with a GPU, which is inherently flexible and then add to its PPA by adding dense, low-precision compute capability.”
Mamtora noted that GPUs have reached their peak in terms of capabilities that manufacturers can incorporate. To remain competitive, Imagination Technologies must establish a robust AI software ecosystem. The company aims to develop a mechanism to compete with NVIDIA's CUDA software stack, offering a platform that allows developers to run their hardware on any available software stack. This suggests that Imagination may be working on something akin to ZLUDA.
Imagination's key challenge is developing a solution to rival NVIDIA’s CUDA. According to Mamtora, “Developers want their applications running on a platform; they just want to translate it and for it to work—for performance, that’s secondary—it just has to work. The fundamental problem we had with our AI accelerator was getting things running in the first place.”
Imagination Technologies is known for its extensive range of AI products, including the PowerVR Series 9XE and the Neural Network Accelerator, which were explicitly designed for neural network computations. While the company plans to introduce next-generation products in the future, its current focus is on enhancing its software frameworks and monitoring market developments.
Although it is too early to predict whether Imagination will regain its market position, the company’s commitment to growth is evident in its revised planning and leadership strategies. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how these efforts unfold.
